The intermittency of wind and solar power is the biggest challenge to a successful clean power system.
The UK’s transition to a secure and sustainable energy future will require a vast, reliable supply of clean energy, supported by large-scale Ultra-long duration energy storage (Ultra-LDES) to balance supply and demand when renewable generation is low.
Hydrogen has a critical role to play as the optimal large-scale Ultra-LDES vector. It can be safely stored for long periods in purpose-built underground salt caverns – a proven, safe technology – then used to generate clean power almost instantly through Hydrogen-to-Power (H2P) when needed.
This critical process provides the resilience, flexibility and security of supply needed to keep the lights on and support the UK’s transition to net zero and beyond.

Our mission is to deliver our first UK hydrogen storage site by the early 2030s, supporting the transition to net zero by 2050.

Dorset
We have been working on a £1 billion underground hydrogen storage project for the past four years, promising to be the UK’s largest of its kind.
East Yorkshire
This site has the potential to match Dorset’s significant capacity and supply major strategic industrial hubs like power stations in the Teesside and the Humber area.
Proven Technology
We utilise underground salt caverns, a proven, safe, and cost-effective technology established in the UK since the 1970s.
Only three onshore areas in the UK possess rock salt deposits thick enough for large-scale caverns: Dorset, East Yorkshire, and Cheshire. Our two proposed sites exploit this geological advantage.

Strategic Locations
Our sites are perfectly placed to connect to the UK-wide Project Union hydrogen pipeline, integrating directly into the national Clean Power system.
They are strategically located within the UK’s largest forecast hydrogen demand clusters:
- The South (including South Wales)
- The East Coast/Teesside
Together, these clusters account for 70% of National Grid’s projected 2040 hydrogen demand.
